Andrzej Łęgowski

Andrzej Łęgowski (full professor) began his music education in Łódź (Poland) by attending the Henryk Wieniawski Secondary Music School (Z. Jeliński’s flute class) and finishing it with distinction in 1969. He then studied music under Henryk Bartnikowski at the State Higher School of Music in Łódź. After graduating he was a participant in a doctoral programme (Warsaw) as well as a number of music courses.

He embarked on his professional artistic career with the Grand Theatre in Łódź. In 1975, however, he moved to Bydgoszcz, where he was offered the position of the principal flute in the Pomeranian Philharmonic Orchestra. His teaching path also began in Łódź, at the Secondary Music School, but it was in Bydgoszcz, at the Feliks Nowowiejski Academy of Music (formerly the State Higher School of Music), that his academic career took shape. He has worked here since the founding of the Academy, gradually earning himself the position of full professor.

Besides being a member of the orchestra Andrzej is also busy giving solo recitals and chamber music concerts in Poland and abroad (Germany and Spain). Among his most significant achievements is participation in such music festivals as the Łódź Artistic Spring Festival, the Polish Contemporary Music Festival in Wrocław, the Bach Music Festival in Słupsk or the Bydgoszcz Music Festival. His vast repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music. He, however, prefers to perform works by French composers, particularly the pieces that date back to the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. He has recorded many of such works for the Polish Radio, most of which he co-performed with the late outstanding Polish pianist Jerzy Godziszewski. Together, the two also gave a series of recitals: ’Echos of the Antiquity’, ’Paris Charms’ and ’An Evening of French Music’.

In his career at the Bydgoszcz Academy of Music he has had some organizational and administrative responsibilities. He was formerly appointed Dean of the Faculty of Instrumental Music and Deputy Rector. He is currently Head of the Department of Wind Instruments. He was also among the originators and organizers of the Chamber Music Competition for Wind Instruments in Bydgoszcz. His artistic activity, particularly his work with the philharmonic orchestra, has been highly acclaimed by music reviewers and commentators.
